BOTM: Steve Hed Special Edition - part 3

Andy Kessler - 31-May-2016
The initial built of this bike started long time ago with another BOTM: the brown was down but now it is U.P.  Still one of my favorite photo shoots of all time:

Then the very same bike ended up in the British Design Museum for the Cycle Revolution Exposition where it still can be admired today.

So we had to built a new bike for Gerard which now is officially his own bike: The Steve Hed special edition. Gerard always has new ideas and likes to try new things (at the end thats how he came up with the design of the U.P.) and thats why the actual BOTM is different from the first one - or in fact very different. Not much the same beside the frame.

As you can read in Gerard's previous blog there are only 22 units made of this frame and 20 are available for our customers. Some of them are gone already. So if you are interested contact one of our local dealers or us directly. Don't wait to long as this will be a one time thing.

How to best describe the ride with this bike? I leave the comment on that to one of our good customers from Austria:

"Once I had a workshop in my company for managerial stuff. We had a honorable professor who teached us a lot about leading and motivating people. One of his major lessons was that you always have to be open minded in your job. The slogan was still in my mind and as I did my first rides with my brand new open U.P. I started smiling and thought to myself: Riding this wonderful bike- this is really OPEN minded"

Hi. Can you buy the U.P. frame without the fork? I was thinking of using a Lauf Grit. Thx.

Hi Jan, at this point that's not officially possible. We simply don't stock it like that in our warehouses and if we start stocking it that way, we double our inventory items and it adds a lot of complexity. That goes against our main Relentless Simplicity motto, we'd have to hire people, grow bigger, it wouldn't be fun anymore, we'd stop and then not only will the OPENs come without forks, they'd come without frames! And many people around the world would cry.

However, you can always email Andy (contact form at left) and see if he just happens to have a frame-only somewhere.

Super simplicity:
I sure like to order a frameset without a frame, a fork, and a seat clamp. Hope the price then is markedly reduced...?
:o)

Definitely. And we offer instant-delivery on that. As Andy and I always say, ultimate simplicity for the business is no products, no suppliers and no customers, but we may have to add a little bit of complexity to make it work long-term!

Hi Bill, that's great to hear. Unfortunately I had to nix my DK participation, really crushing, but I'll be back!
