Full suspended

Gerard Vroomen - 17-Feb-2017
As promised during the live stream Q&A, we owe you an update on our full suspension frame project. It makes me sick just having to write this, as I wanted this project to succeed for so many reasons, most of them not business-related, but we have had no choice but to stop.

I know we said we'd share all our trials and tribulations, but it's hard with this one, I just don't want to type. As if it’s not really true if I don’t write it down.

It's not even anything that bad, I enjoyed working on the project and I really enjoyed working with the people we worked with, but we all together just had to come to the conclusion we were chasing a ghost more than having a realistic chance of success. Sometimes it is like this, everybody is of good will and wants to make it happen, but it just doesn't work out. Nobody to blame, chalk one up to over-excitement and make it part of our expensive education.

In a way it's also part of how we operate at OPEN, we want to try things, and part of wanting to try is taking a chance to fail. And so fail we do, from time to time, but when we succeed, it's something like the U.P. or the ONE+. As frustrating as it feels in the case of the full suspension bike, I guess that's a trade-off worth taking.

So is there nothing to cheer us up? Actually there is, because we are always thinking and always working on new stuff. So part of our CrossFondue next Sunday (February 26) is to show the people who join us in Basel a sneak peek of other stuff we're working on. And for those who cannot make it to Basel that day, Andy and I will do a live stream the day after. More about that soon, so jut in the off-chance you are not subscribed yet, make sure you get the UPDATES newsletter so you'll know the details of that live stream.

Life is trial and error. Wondered if you guys ever thought about a OPEN Forum so current, new and potential customers could share experiences. Getting ready to drop the hammer and would love to discuss some of the past builds ( UP in this case) and what they would do different, etc. You know trial and error. Would like to learn from other folks mistakes or successes.

The comment section of the UP page is a forum of sorts, it's definitely possible to get an answer there. I was thinking about a more formal forum the other day, who knows.

We can only slightly imagine what you guys are feeling????? That being said, and I'm sure Im not alone, what makes OPEN attractive is...simplicity, function, and QUALITY of your bikes.
That alone is an Unbeatan Path in the bicycle world.
Thanks for making such quality bicycles, so looking forward to many miles, followed by lots of??
Cheers to you guys??

Hey Gerard & Andy,
I´m even more fan of your concept - how you involve your customers/audience/friends. We all know that there are always challenges and sometimes you fail.
That´s live but it´s authentic and it makes your concept and products even more interesting!
Keep going on!

That's awesome. Not the failure in itself, of course, but the validation that you really are pushing boundaries.
... you don't enter races to win, but to _try_ to win. Sure, winning is not overrated, but it don't count if you're not competing at your level.
I'm sure that you could R&D a fantastic 'shopping bike', with guaranteed success, but I don't think that's why you founded OPEN :)

I’ll not try to minimise any disappointment or give any hollow “positive thinking” talk (!) – but really don’t be rough on yourselves folks!
Remember – if you continue on a straight path that is 1° off, after a short time that 6’ becomes 6 miles and no-one is happy!
I think I can safely say we all aspire to one of your bikes and wish you all success – we TRUST you for your future designs and endeavours.
We only wish you success,
God bless you, Robin

GV,

How were you defining "success" with respect to this project - did you target absolute metrics, or an improvement over an existing benchmark? And were your standards too difficult to reach in terms of the engineering problems, or were the issues more related to the business cost of achieving your goals?

As always, thank you - both for the outstanding bikes, and the corporate ethos behind them.

Ever,

I too respect your open-ness and would be very interested to hear the root-cause. A problem shared can often lead to resolution.

Never say die. Or quit. For good. Some day. Hopefully. Soon. It'll be back. Obviously you have high standards for quality and innovation and that's a good thing. I guarantee your minds will be still working passively on the challenges you faced during the dually project. Heck, you gotta live up to your name after all.... ;-)
