BOTM: U.P.U.P. (Understated Performance U.P.) - part 1

Gerard Vroomen - 19-Jul-2016
Well, we've had some crazy builds in the BOTMs lately, and those are fun to do. But sometimes it's also nice to tone it down, keep it simple. This month's U.P. is one of those, understated graphics, solid parts, lightweight and nimble but without screaming it off the top of the mountains. Just a great bike with enough tire size and enough clearance to ride into the forests and over the mountains without a worry.

In truth, we shot this BOTM a while ago and I could never muster too much enthusiasm for it. But now, it feels like it is just what the doctor ordered. Maybe it's because it's summer, maybe because it's a busy time period, but whatever it is, here it is, your moment of Zen:

And yes, that is Andy riding this U.P. in a mountain bike race. You can see a bit more about that ride here:

Very true. I'm learning that reliable is better than light when it comes down to it. Although I love light, there is definitely a balance. ;-) Light and strong is best!

As it was a mountain bike race, Andy wanted to throw on some mtb tires. So he is using 650b x 2.1" Schwalbe Racing Ralph tires on a mis-matched ENVE M60 rear wheel and M50 front wheel that he had lying around.

Hi - i'm very interested in the Open U.P. bike as a multi-purpose bike for training, and exploring, and also taking my young child out with me on adventures. Do you know if it's possible, or have you ever seen one with a child seat attached? I know it's a relatively light weight carbon frame which is my chief concern. Any advice or information would be gratefully received. Nice bikes by the way!

Hi Tim, I don't think a seat tube-mounted child seat is a good idea, but I use a Weehoo trailer behind mine and that works great. I don't know how old your child is but starting at 2 years old, the Weehoo is great. I find that our daughter stays occupied in there much better than in the child seat (which we have on my wife's bike (not an UP).

That's really helpful Gerard. I've received the same advice from another source too. Thanks for your prompt response!

Fabulous bike I had great service from Open shipping my bike to the shop and guiding me to size and answering all my questions. I set up with M50 Enve 650b and also Enve CX 700c, Di2 , 3T bars stem and seat post, WTB rocket Ti saddle and Ti egbeater Crank Brother's pedals. Weight 17lbs. Acceleration is excellent, ride is great and the handling on descents is very good. I use primarily as a gravel bike, but it is great on the road as well. I have ridden a Ti gravel bike for 4 years which I yhought was excellent until I rode the OPEN!
